The PRC 1 Fundamentals of Accounting Study Companion is an original, exam-focused learning resource prepared by the BGB-360 Academy Academic Team for students studying accounting under the ICAP Education Scheme 2025.
The companion explains the reasoning behind accounting records rather than asking students to memorise isolated rules. It connects accounting concepts, double-entry logic, books of prime entry, ledgers, adjustments, financial statements and examination practice through a structured learning sequence.
Each chapter progresses from concepts and learning outcomes to worked illustrations, common errors, checkpoint questions, objective practice, detailed answers and revision controls. This structure helps students learn a topic, practise it, diagnose mistakes and repeat weaker areas before moving forward.
The publication is suitable for independent study, classroom support, revision and examination preparation. It may be used alongside lectures and the official ICAP Study Text and Question Bank.
Understand the purpose of accounting, the difference between bookkeeping and accounting, users of financial information, financial-statement elements, the accounting equation, debit and credit logic, capital, revenue, drawings and the accounting cycle.
Learn how transactions enter the accounting system through source documents and books of prime entry. The chapter covers sales and purchases day books, returns, cash books, petty cash, the general journal, trade discounts, settlement discounts and document controls.
Develop accurate posting and balancing skills. Topics include ledger accounts, control accounts, running balances, the chart of accounts, preparing a trial balance, errors that may or may not affect agreement and the transition to the next accounting period.
Apply the accrual basis of accounting to expenses and income. Students learn year-end adjustment entries, opening and closing balances, the combined-balance method, financial-statement effects and the treatment of accrued and prepaid amounts.
Account for irrecoverable receivables and expected credit losses. The chapter explains write-offs, recoveries, specific and general allowances, receivables analysis, financial-statement presentation and common examination mistakes.
Understand recognition, initial measurement, capital and revenue expenditure, depreciation concepts, straight-line and reducing-balance methods, changes in estimates, disposals, accumulated depreciation and accounting entries.
Learn what qualifies as inventory, which costs may be included, how to calculate the cost of conversion, how to apply FIFO and weighted-average methods and how to measure inventory at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
Identify and correct accounting errors using appropriate journal entries. Coverage includes errors affecting and not affecting the trial balance, suspense accounts, correction methods, the effect of errors on profit and financial position, and examination shortcuts.
Reconcile cash-book records with bank information. Students learn the treatment of outstanding deposits, unpresented cheques, bank charges, direct credits, errors, overdrafts, adjusted cash-book balances and reconciliation statements.
Integrate accounting records and year-end adjustments into complete financial statements. The chapter covers statement formats, closing adjustments, double-entry effects, gross profit, profit for the year, financial position and partnership appropriation.
Apply the complete accounting process through integrated examination-style cases. Students prepare adjustment workings, statements of profit or loss, statements of financial position and partnership appropriations under suggested time and mark controls.
Reading an accounting book is not enough to build examination performance. Students need to retrieve rules from memory, complete calculations without looking at solutions, identify errors and repeat weaker questions.
This companion therefore uses a five-stage study cycle:
Suitable for students learning PRC 1 alongside classes, employment or other subjects. The plan distributes the syllabus across twelve weeks and includes integrated revision, mock-paper practice and error review.
Suitable for students who already have some accounting exposure but need structured revision. Chapters are grouped into four controlled study blocks covering foundations, adjustments, corrections, reconciliations and complete statements.
A focused final review for revisiting the accounting equation, debit-credit logic, frequent adjustments, inventory, depreciation, error correction, bank reconciliation, financial-statement formats and examination-software controls.
The publication is supplied as a protected interactive PDF. Students can use the clickable Contents page and PDF bookmarks to move directly to relevant chapters. Designated answer, score and review spaces are fillable, allowing students to record responses and track revision electronically.
For the best experience, open the file in a modern PDF application that supports interactive form fields. Save a personal working copy before entering answers so progress can be retained.
