Welcome & How to Study
Your journey begins with a simple goal: understand the method, practise independently and solve with confidence.
Welcome to Mastering Algebra. You will learn how letters represent numbers, how equations describe relationships and how algebra helps solve everyday problems.
Begin with variables and expressions, then progress to equations, formulas, inequalities, sequences, functions and graphs. Each new topic builds on earlier learning. Give yourself time to understand a method before moving on.
Your Goals for This Welcome Lesson
- Understand how to work through the course.
- Prepare your study materials and a realistic routine.
- Learn how checking and correcting mistakes supports progress.
Get Ready to Learn
Have a notebook, pen, pencil and ruler ready. Use a scientific calculator only when an activity permits it. Basic arithmetic, fractions, decimals and negative numbers will support your learning; revise these whenever you identify a gap.
Your Six-Step Study Routine
- Preview: Read the learning targets so you know what you are aiming to do.
- Understand: Follow the explanation and ask why each step works.
- Practise: Attempt questions before opening the solutions.
- Check: Compare your working and identify the first incorrect step.
- Review: Use quiz feedback to revisit skills that need attention.
- Retest: Try difficult questions again later without looking at the answer.
Show Your Working, Then Check
You will learn equation-solving methods later. This example shows what clear mathematical working looks like.
Example: Find the Unknown Number
Solve 3x + 5 = 20.
Step 1: Subtract 5 from both sides.
3x = 15
Step 2: Divide both sides by 3.
x = 5
Check: Replace x with 5 in the original equation.
3 × 5 + 5 = 20. Both sides are equal, so the solution is correct.
Turn Mistakes into a Study Plan
Keep an error log in your notebook. For each mistake, record the topic, what went wrong, the correct approach and your result on a later attempt.
Make your note specific: “I forgot to multiply the second term inside the brackets” identifies a skill to practise. A clear correction helps you improve your next attempt.
Your First Activity: Make a Commitment
Begin with two or three study sessions each week, around 30–45 minutes per session. Adapt the routine to your needs. Write the following in your notebook:
My study days: ____________________
My first learning target: ____________________
One topic I want to improve: ____________________
These lines are prompts for your notebook, rather than fields you can type into on this page.
Before You Continue
- Prepare your study materials.
- Write your personal study plan.
- Set aside a page in your notebook for your error log.
